Irma May Series- the start of Multi media works
" The character of Irma May sprung from my grotesque paintings and a mélange of personal experiences. Now I realize the series is an optimized autobiography created by my subconscious; a life I yet have to live.'"
Irma’s creation story is made up of three pieces, that reflects my own triumph over hardship with strength and peace.
First, Irma receiving shocking news, second, she is reflecting and processing the news, finally she is willingly surrenders herself but not without a serious dare. This mini series reflects my own triumph over hardship with strength and peace.
I use hard pencils to ensure the lines are preserved the way I laid them, so the viewer would keep on stepping closer to the art eventually breaking the line of privacy, and that closeness is symbolically revealing me.
During the global pandemic, as a theater company member, I witnessed first-hand the cultural, intellectual and emotional losses due to the closing of performing arts. Experimental small theaters companies are the lifeblood of the city, they are more nimble and relevant as they can take more risks. Trap Door Theater is a space committed to challenging and obscure work through diverse voices using established and imaginative techniques reflecting the absurdities of today’s society. The director of the play, “Monsieur d’Eon is a Woman,” practiced conscious casting, void of race or assigned genders. This infectious ensemble touched me at the core and inspired a current series of the subject “the actor revealed”.
Witch-hunt is my epic painting about humanity’s inability to learn from mistakes to thrive for peace and balance. I use recognizable historical and pop cultural references as markers of past, present and future.
I see a human moment for a split second, that is already gone, but stays in my mind. I record these moments in my sketchbook, that I laler recreate in my studio."
Just like a memory has missing pieces, these paintings change too as the light gets stronger in the background. The paintings are on loosely woven linen primed only under the characters, the surrounding is created without continuous solid paint, through the resulting gaps light can come through from behind.
"In my portraits of emotions I capture personal inner experiences as well as moments that I observe, the features are born as a result of the characters' micro expressions."
A gallery of smaller works about of a group of women coming together over cocktails to share their stories.
A series born of the grief caused my best friend's untimely passing. Filled with confusing emotions of her almost tangible presence that mixed with the innate emptiness that she left behind I let these paintings outpour of me.
I followed the Brother's Grimm version I grew up with, and from the prespective of my childhood. I was always keen on seeing proper illustrations with fine details.
It was created for the Art Institue of Chicago's Betty Rhymer Gallery invitational juried exhibition "If the shoe fits". The exhibtion was an expolartion of folk tale type AT 510A, that in the Western culture is commonly known as the story of Cinderella. In fact, the tale has several hundreds of versions in many cultures accross the globe going back centuries.
Series intended to be kept together, the series of 8 paintings is $24000.
Visitors like to dress-up coming to Ponce City Market in Atlanta, I am too a frequent visitor. I call these works “sightings” or shadows passing, as I they are passing me by in a second, but the impression of them lingers in my mind.

....I also liked the drawings that illustrated this story; they helped my imagination. It ends on a mouthwatering cliffhanger...

Tapestries
My life in art began growing up next to my mother’s loom in Budapest, Hungary. In tapestry weaving, new colors are achieved by mixing different yarns into one string. This method left an imprint on me in the way that I use colors and texture; the treatment of the surface gives the soul of the expressions of my paintings.
Tapestries woven by my mother, Orsolya Arato based on my paintings.
